Soon after his birth, the Babel family moved to the port city of Mykolaiv.They later returned to live in a more fashionable part of Odessa in 1906. Babel’s innovative prose is distinguished by aphoristic precision, combined with the metaphoric extravagance of Modernist poetry. It had a considerable impact on the genres of short story and autobiographical fiction both in Russia and abroad, especially in the United States.
